Dani's Story: A Review

Ever read a real story?
I mean, a truly real one.
Well, I did.
And Dani's Story is the first one.

At first, I didn't pay much attention on the novel since I don't really go for real stories.
I usually go for fictions.
Quite a few friends have read it before me until I saw the novel on my roomate's table.
Since I didn't have anything to read at that moment,
I grabbed it and took a look at the cover page.

A photo of a young girl looking away from the camera in black and white.
Dani's Story.
Sometimes the kindness of stranger can save a life.
Diane and Bernie Lierow with Kay West.
That was how I went through the cover page.

I turned to page 1.
Then turned to page 2, 3, 4 and I couldn't put it down.
The story is getting interesting and real.
And scary.
For the reality to be so devastating and horror,
is unimaginable.

The story is written by the Danielle Ann Crockett's (now legally a Lierow) foster mother, Diane Lierow
whom I think as the most kind hearted person that Dani can ever meet.
She is the one who keep on insisting to adopt a child when her husband still hesitates.
And when the time comes where the two have come to a complete agreement,
they go to the journey of searching for Dani.

Visiting the Heart Gallery at first and are attracted to a girl who is looking away from the camera,
they decide to adopt her.
But it is never an easy way.
Everyone give them a "these-two-people-are-crazy" look when they mention that they want to know more about the young girl in the photo.

Meeting Garet, the one responsible for sending Dani to foster care,
she reveals everything about Dani, from the worst to the unimaginably terrifying.
Mixture of feelings overwhelms the two as they listen the story of Michelle Crockett, the human who has no sense of responsibility, the condition of the house and the condition of Dani herself.

Dani's house was filled with human waste and cockroaches.

Dani, semi naked, lay on a torn mouldy mattress on the floor.

Her ribs stuck out.

Her matted hair crawled with lice.

Her skin was covered in bites, rashes and sores.

Dani with her favourite toy, Lullaby Gloworm.

Not being toilet trained even until she's 7 of age,
not being able to speak even a word for the absence of communication with people,
still drinking from the bottle, doesn't even know how to drink from a cup,
doesn't know how to chew and swallow food- keep on stuffing her mouth with everything on plate until she throws all out from her mouth,
and is still wearing diapers.

Dani's brought to the Lierow's home where there she finds the real freedom and happiness in her life.
Swimming, going to the beach, taking a walk, communicating, having her own pinky bedroom, those change her to be warmer.
Even her teacher in school is surprised with her sudden positive changes after a week with the Lierows.
She begins to smile and communicate with others but still cannot speak.
But she never tolerates whenever somebody wants to touch her hair.
Most probably she has a bad experience of her hair or head being hurt by someone.

After she is successfully adopted by the Lierows,
more and more positive changes happen to Dani,
including where she is now able to utter certain words.
The last word that I remember in the book is
"I pity."
Everyone does not seem to be getting the point.
She repeats it again and again and finally they find out that she said that
"I pretty."

She is currently progressing very much faster and better.
The family even create a website for her to tell about her improvement to those who follow their amazing story.

A line to remember: Sometimes the kindness of stranger can really save a life.

p/s: the part in the third website where it mentions that William sleeps in the laundry room is totally untrue.
William in fact gets the biggest room in the house.
